Exceptional lacquer chest of drawers with doors by Alfred-Emmanuel Beurdeley
BEURDELEY Alfred-Emmanuel
Chest of drawers or side cabinet decorated with Japanese Hira maki-e and Taka maki-e lacquer panels with gold decoration on a black background on the front, depicting seascapes and pagodas. It opens with a wide drawer and two leaves with mahogany veneered panels. The curved sides feature lacquer panels decorated in gold on a black background with flowering branches and a bird. Finely chased and gilded bronze ornamentation in matt gold and burnished gold, including a frieze of foliage on the belt, acanthus leaf falls, and panel frames with heart-shaped raisins, baguettes, rosettes, oak leaf garlands and pampers.
Spanish brocatelle marble top.
Signed «BY» under engraved bronzes. Alfred Beurdeley manufacture.
French Louis XVI style work from the second half of the 19th century, circa 1860-1870. Based on a model by the cabinetmaker Jean-Henri Riesener.
