Reni Guido

1575-1642

Guido Reni dit Le Guide, born in Bologna on November 4, 1575 and died in Bologna on August 18, 1642, is an Italian painter from the Bologna school. It is imbued with the mannerist ideal of Michelangelesque grazia grace but asserts a style particularly influenced by Caravaggio.

Guido Reni first entered the studio of Denis Calvaert, a Flemish painter living in Bologna, then continued his study of painting at the Académie des Carrache, bearing the name of Accademia dei desiderosi, then Accademia degli Incamminati. In 1602, Guido Reni went to Rome to study the works of Raphael as well as the ancient sculptures.
