The “Cupid” clock by Ferdinand Berthoud
An important patinated and gilt bronze clock depicting Cupid holding a drapery, which reveals a dial set on a truncated fluted column. He points to his attributes, a torch and a quiver, supported by a cloud of flowers. The beautifully enamelled date dial features a blued steel hand to mark the days and two openwork gilt bronze hands to mark the hours and minutes. It is signed by F. Berthoud Paris.
The set rests on a rectangular griotte red marble base, highlighted at the top by a double ormolu frieze of flowers and interlacing designs, and at the bottom by a frieze of alternating spandrels and acanthus leaves.
French work, circa 1880.
