Piazza San Marco by Raymond Allegre

Raymond Allègre

Large painting depicting an exceptional festive scene in the famous Piazza San Marco in Venice (Italy). In the foreground, a gondolier leads two women dressed in magnificent gowns as they enjoy a picturesque stroll. In the background, we can distinguish the majestic Basilica of San Marco, one of Venice’s most emblematic and famous monuments. The basilica’s characteristic domes and columns stand proud against the sky.

On the left is an imposing pink granite column adorned with a statue of Saint Theodore. The statue shows the saint with his feet resting on a dragon, symbolising his victory over evil. The column provides a solemn presence and adds a historical dimension to the scene, evoking Venice’s rich cultural heritage. In the centre of the square, Italian flags flutter gracefully in the gentle breeze. The bright colours of green, white and red add a patriotic touch to the scene, symbolising Italy’s national identity. The elegantly waving flags create a lively atmosphere and bear witness to the celebrations underway in Piazza San Marco.
